It’s overwhelming how many Indian wedding invitation ideas are out there now. Google it to see for yourself. It’s a good thing, yes, but how do you choose? Some couples (.. ok, brides) want to coordinate everything from save the dates to invitations to stationery. If that’s you, you can do it. There’s no shame in it. Decide what you want before you choose your save the dates, then coordinate everything after that.
Try to figure out a theme or colors first, then move onto invitations. Check out this post to figure out a color palette that works.
Want to add something really unique? Make your own monogram and use it throughout your wedding stationery.
Type of Invites
These days, you really can send out any type of invite you like. Want to send an evite invitation? Sure, you could (I’ve never seen it but hey it’s possible!).

What to consider before ordering Indian wedding invitations:
Ordering Online
If you’re ordering online, think about shipping costs, ship time and taxes. Always request a sample before ordering.
If the online vendor you’re looking at is from India (and you’re not there), do some legwork to figure out if they’re a reliable vendor. Have you heard about their reputation or checked any reviews? Ask your friends or family before ordering.
Wording and Editing
What do you say inside the wedding invitation? Wording can go modern or traditional. Look at wedding invitations you or your family have received in the past. Use those as templates and customize to make it your own. Many of the online retailers also have wording templates.
Ask for help with proofing. Don’t do it yourself! It’s like reading your resume. You can’t always see the mistakes when you read it over and over again. Ask your fiancee, parents, siblings, whoever – to take a look. Another set of eyes always helps and chances are that they’ll spot some kind of typo.
RSVPs
RSVPs have to go somewhere. Before ordering your invitations (and doing your wording), you’ll have to figure out what type of RSVP you want. Make it easy and stick to online RSVPs (Check out this post to find an RSVP site that works for you.)
Or, go the traditional way and pre-postage return envelopes with RSVP cards. Your choice, but plan it out with the invites.
Don’t feel like ordering Indian wedding invitations? DIY it. This could be one step on how to save time while planning your Indian wedding.
Timeline
When should you plan out your Indian wedding invitation ideas? ASAP. Ok, don’t freak out.
Here’s a reasonable timeline:
Note about RSVPs: Assume that you’ll need to follow up with people who don’t respond. This is inevitable with Indian weddings regardless of everyone’s best intentions! This is a task to assign to your parents.
Note about Destination Weddings: The invitations and RSVP should be sent out earlier than noted above since more upfront planning and logistics is involved
